Android 2.1 on Xperia X10 Buzz

We’ve already seen some leaked details regarding the Android 2.1 update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, but now we have something a lot more definitive. German site ViMoNews managed to get hands-on with the Xperia X10 at last week’s IFA show in Berlin.

The interesting part is that the build they played with was running Android 2.1. They give a two and a half minute preview of the firmware in the video (from 3:36 to 6:04). Check out the video and our initial observations below

  • The whole UI seems much faster than current firmware builds.
  • There is a new slider lock screen.
  • The X10 now supports 5 homescreens instead of 3.
  • I noticed no significant changes to Timescape/Mediascape.
  • It has a new launcher.
  • The theme shown is darker than our current phones. I have a feeling that the colour choices present currently in Timescape will now apply to the rest of the phone too.
Another Android 2.1 video has emerged this time showing the live backgrounds. The bad news is that this results in more lag. We also see a demo of the video functions. It’s not the greatest video quality but we’ve included it below. Thanks wimpiedb!

Whilst Sony Ericsson UK is consistently saying that the Android 2.1 (Éclair) update is due to hit the Xperia X10 before the end of Q3, it looks like our friends in Canada will have to wait a little longer. SE Canada’s twitter account yesterday confirmed that they are “aiming for Q4”.
This doesn’t really surprise too much given the customisations that Rogers is likely to deploy on the handset, meaning that SE can’t use the stock/unbranded firmware for the region. However, it’s not going to mean much for those waiting for the update. When asked to clarify on the timeline, SE Canada simply replied “Q4 runs October to December – hope that helps.” Erm, probably doesn’t help very much. Check out the twitter screengrab after the cut.

Sony Ericsson Spain has confirmed on their Facebook channel that the Android 2.1 (Eclair) update for the Xperia X10 will launch during week 38 (20th to 26th September). That fits with the “end of Q3” timeline we’ve been given previously – it’s good to know that this date still appears to be entact. No other details were given.
The Android 2.1 Xperia update appears to be imminent according to Sony Ericsson Russia. They just tweeted that the “Android 2.1 Xperia update is close (translated)”. It then followed that with another tweet saying that the release is “much closer than you think (translated)”. Obviously there is only a couple of weeks left for the company to hit its Q3 deadline, but it’s nice to know that there won’t be any delays (fingers crossed!) The wait’s nearly over folks…

  1. Excuse me .. are there any news about SE supporting Arabic Languages with the upcoming Eclair ? (like what samsung did on S galaxy)

  2. @Mohamed

BICCO group, the official SE distributor in Kuwait gave a solution for the "Arabic" support. You can download an app called "Mersal" using it you can read and send arabic sms.

    Link to Mersal application:
    http://android.azizus.info/mirsal/mirsal.apk

Install this app on your phone and it should work. But haven't tested it on my x10 since I don't understand the language.

Let me know if this helps for the time being.

All the news about SE supporting the Arabic Language with upcoming Eclair is still a Rumour. Nothing is sure so don't expect much although there are ways of installing language pack on an android phone if you have a root access.

  3. I have that application on my phone and it helps alot in reading messages
but the phone looks ugly when i cant use the timescape
as any comment i will get on my facebook will just appear as multiple squares

plus .. i cant browse arabic websites so it s kinda paralyzing
I m still waiting to see those rumors that might become true
other wise i will try to Root the phone (im new with smartphones and i dont know if that rooting thing is risky)

one more thing i wanted to tell :
after i updated the firmware the device is slower and i need to connect to the wifi manually every time i get away from the range of thenetwork and then come back so do u have any idea what is that about ?

  4. @Mohamed: I can understand the problem you're facing.Rooting isn't that big a risk but still you're doing something that's against the manufacturer's policy.
Try clean firmware install using PC Companion or SEUS. Seems u have done OTA update and check which firmware version ur on currently.

  5. i installed it using the Pc companion !!
but 1st times i didnt know how to do it
and i was interrupting the process when it comes to closing the phone and reattaching it with the laptop

but later on i checked on ur explaination here and then i could do it correctly
so could that be the cause ?
    i dont know ..
    the Current Build is R2BA024

    another question plz :D
do u know how to make the sound louder ??
i can barely hear the others when im using it in the street .. :/ !!

  6. @Mohamed:

Yeah I Guess that could be the cause and are u using any task killer app on X10? coz its a must in order to get your phone running smooth.

R2BA026 is the latest firmware available and has improved the volume issue to some extent although not too great but still manageable.. I would suggest check OTA/SEUS and see if firmware R2BA026 update available for your region. If not you can Install the generic R2BA026 firmware but that would debrand your phone so its upto you really.

In the end try updating your phone via SEUS even if its not going to get you to the latest firmware...please backup everything on your phone prior to reinstalling firmware.
